Background
Charles R. Vaughan, known as Charley, Sr., is a now-retired Indiana attorney whose career spanned nearly seven decades of personal injury and condemnation law practice at Vaughan & Vaughan, the firm founded by his father in 1913. Vaughan was named Indiana Trial Lawyer of the Year in 1987 and received the Indiana Trial Lawyers Association's Lifetime Achievement Award in 1998. He has been listed in The Best Lawyers in America for personal injury litigation since 1994 and has been repeatedly voted an Indiana Super Lawyer by his peers. With his son, Charles V. Vaughan, he served as counsel for Ryan White in the landmark 1980s case in which they fought for Ryan's rights against AIDS-related discrimination at an Indiana school. Vaughan earned his J.D. from Valparaiso University School of Law in 1957 and his A.B. from Indiana University in 1953. He served as President of the Indiana Trial Lawyers Association in 1966 and is a Sustaining Member of the Indiana Trial Lawyers Association and the Association of Trial Lawyers, a Charter Member of the Indiana College of Trial Lawyers, a member of the Lawyer Pilots Bar Association, a Million Dollar Advocates Forum member, and a Charter Fellow of the Litigation Council of America.
